Professor Tobias Harks

As of October 2022, Professor Tobias Harks holds the Chair of Mathematical Optimization at the University of Passau. Prior to his appointment in Passau he held professorships at Maastricht University  and Augsburg University. He obtained his doctoral degree at the Zuse-Institute in Berlin followed by a postdoc position at TU Berlin. His research interests contain discrete and continuous optimization with a focus on distributed optimization, algorithmic learning and game theory and mathematics of AI.

"In the age of digitalisation and artificial intelligence, I consider it essential to make the resulting algorithmic methods describable and explainable in mathematical terms. Mathematical optimization, the theory of distributed systems and particularly game theory play a crucial role. In collaboration with distinguished researchers from the University of Passau, I want to contribute to the explainability of the complex systems emerging in the field.

Currently, I am working on the theory of distributed optimization of resource allocations, on bilevel mixed-integer problems and on the theory of dynamic traffic flows.”
