"My research interest is in secure IT systems where I focus on hardware. I am a hardware designer and have gained practical experience doing that: As an engineer, I used to develop crypto chips at Infineon in Munich. IT security is a compelling topic that also drives my research interest. I study the phenomena of our time. These include fake videos or ways to manipulate or poison algorithms by feeding false data to the training pool for machine learning. I am fascinated by how you can also use all parts of the systems for the security of the systems themselves: you can combine hardware and software components. Then there are artificial intelligence methods that are not only capable of protecting IT systems but also recognise security issues within their own methods. What I like about the University of Passau is the interdisciplinary approach in collaboration, with the mathematicians in our faculty but also with the legal or humanities scholars in other faculties. We tackle the problem issues from the machine side, whereas the academics from other disciplines concentrate on the human aspect. This cooperation results in new projects that would have been impossible without the interdisciplinary approach."
