Geographical NetWorkshop: the search for evidence in the field of geoarchaeology – bibliometric information and network analysis approaches

The GEOarc project focuses from a scientometric / network analysis point of view on the cooperation between natural and cultural sciences in the field of geoarchaeology.

Geoarchaeology is a research field in which both cultural and natural scientists work. There is controversial debate at the present time regarding some fundamental questions on the way they see themselves, the scientific insights they share, and the goals of geoarchaeology. For example, there are clearly uncertainties and disagreements among geoarchaeologists at present with regard to the disciplinary orientation and localisation of geoarchaeology and the potentials for and impediments to practical cooperation between the natural and cultural sciences. The GEOarc project approaches these questions from a scientometric / network analysis point of view.

A contribution to the discussion on the unity of science and the practical possibilities and limitations of interdisciplinary work.

From the point of view of empirical science studies, the project will make a contribution to the epistemological discussions on the unity of science and the possibilities of and limitations to practical interdisciplinary work. Geoarchaeology is understood as an interdisciplinary communication context in which work can be done on the question of the compatibility of thinking and research in the natural sciences and humanities in a methodologically affordable framework. This project thus aims to achieve an empirical clarification and illustration of the debate about the interdisciplinarity and scientific integration of the sciences, taking geoarchaeology as an example.
