BMBF project FINESSE: Developing a secure smart sensor for street and rail vehicles
In light of increased digitalisation, automation and specification, new and comprehensive solutions are needed in terms of standardisation and legislation to ensure IT security in street and rail vehicles. Starting out from the shared challenges that the rail and road domains face, the FINESSE project is set to examine, specify and thus facilitate the speedy standardisation and realisation of methods for the detection and prevention of vehicle intrusion in a manner that is consistent for both domains. This sub-project of the University of Passau is looking into the design, implementation and analysis of a vehicle-based "smart sensor" in a bid to ensure the secure output of control data and status information from the vehicle and the transmission of this data to a security operations centre. The system should also provide for the secure preliminary processing and/or filtering of data in the vehicle. Procedures to protect the smart sensor against physical attacks will likewise be explored. The resulting technology will be trialled both in the lab and on a rail-based test vehicle.
