'Christian ethics is facing the challenge of finding some answers to the question of how human life can succeed in a complete sense. That question poses itself in its basic form wherever humans have to make a genuine decision on a matter of conscience. And also wherever they seek standards and yardsticks to help them get their bearings. And it is becoming more concrete in the fast-growing application fields of medical ethics and bioethics, environmental ethics and the social problems of our society, which are many and various.'
