Professor Jens Zumbrägel

Professor Jens Zumbrägel has been Professor of Mathematics with a focus on Cryptography since 2017. He is all enthusiastic about algebra and its applications in public key cryptography and communication technology. His research focus is on the discrete logarithm problem, and currently also on post-quantum cryptography and codes over rings.

"In my research, I focus on cryptography, in other words on mathematical encryption techniques. The long history of cryptography is as thrilling as it is instructive. Nowadays, for example, we are told every day to encrypt passwords before sending them. Numbers with hundreds of digits are used to protect confidential information or allow secure authentication. In my research, I investigate how exactly this process works. The interdisciplinary collaboration with the computer science researchers has been a real benefit. It is always fascinating to see how abstract maths can be practically applied, like in the direct security analysis of encryption processes. In many instances, this leads to mutual inspiration and throws up interesting new problems."
